Education Review Office Report Recognises the Great Work at SJS
The purpose of an Education Review Office review is to give parents and the wider school community an assurance about the quality of education that a school provides. An ERO report answers the question “How effectively is this school’s curriculum promoting student learning – engagement, progress and achievement?”
Key points in the ERO report include:
- The school has a positive reporting history.
- The school’s promotion and response to student wellbeing is extensive.
- School achievement information shows that over two thirds of students are consistently achieving at and above the national standards in reading, writing and mathematics.
- The board, senior leaders and teachers use achievement information well to make positive changes for learners.
- Students’ progress and achievement is closely monitored by teachers, senior leaders and the board.
- There are high expectations and a shared responsibility for raising all student achievement.
- Student enjoyment and engagement in the learning process is clearly evident.
- Staff has high expectations of students and believes in them as capable, competent learners.

Minister of Education Congratulates Board and School:
Hon Hekia Parata, Minister of Education, wrote to the board of trustees to comment on the school being placed on the ERO 4-5 year review cycle.
The Minister recognises the demanding criteria that need to be fulfilled to achieve a 4-5 year review. She congratulates the board and all involved in providing a high quality education for SJS learners.

Catholic Schools’ Office External Special Character Review
The purpose of the external reviewis to provide assurance to the Proprietor (Bishop Patrick Dunn) that the school has appropriate systems in place to deliver education with a Catholic Special Character in terms of the following three dimensions: Catholic Community (Te Iwi Whanui Katorika); Pastoral Care (Manaakitanga) and Religious Education (Te Whakaaronga Whakapono).
Key points in the CSO review include:
The school proclaims the mission and gospel of Jesus Christ. Parents spoke of how welcome they feel at the school and the strong sense of family, warmth and caring which provides a nurturing environment for the personal spiritual growth of children
The board of trustees is ably led by a chairperson who has the Catholic Special Character at heart.
A strong leadership team has been formed by the principal. The leadership team are all skilled practitioners and share the principal’s vision and high standards.
- The Director of Religious Studies quiet and gentle approach to the job ensures that professional development, liturgies and other important religious occasions are carried our efficiently and calmly.
The school recognises the importance of continuing a strong relationship with the Sisters of Mercy and are proud to continue the work the sisters began.
The board of trustees, staff, parents and parish happily work together with respect and co-operation to provide a nurturing environment. This teamwork and collaboration makes for a happy and cohesive learning environment.
Staff modelled the core values in all their dealings with students and this was reflected in the positive way students related to each other. Parents acknowledged that teachers were passionate, approachable and respectful to them and their children.
At St Joseph’s School the history, tradition and community spirit together with the passion, enthusiasm, spiritual and academic leadership…..combines to form a happy, united and successful Catholic school.
